When I talk about lactose intolerance people immediately think of milk. But the truth is that lactose is often added to foods that are not directly associated with dairy. If you have lactose intolerance, it is very important to know these hidden sources.
Obvious products that should light a warning sigh are powdered coffee creamer and whipped toppings. Basically, anything to do with milk and dairy drinks will receive special attention. Here are some of the common ingredients you might find in dairy products that you should be wary of:
milk and lactose
whey
curds
milk by-products
dry milk solids
non-fat
dry milk powder
If you are intentionally avoiding dairy products and still suffer from bloating, gas and other symptoms of intolerance, start taking a closer look at the food labels.
Here are some not-so-common foods you might not have expected to find lactose in:
Bread and other baked goods
Processed breakfast cereals
Instant potatoes
soups, and
breakfast drinks
Margarine (other than kosher)
Salad dressings
Candies and other snacks
Mixes for pancakes, biscuits, and cookies
And last but not least – pharmaceutical inactive ingredients.
Did you know that lactose is also used in more than 20 percent of prescription drugs and about 6 percent of over-the-counter medicines? Many types of birth control pills contain lactose, and even (would you believe it) some tablets for stomach acid and gas. Now it is often claimed that these products will only affect highly intolerant people, but I can tell you from first hand that, although I have no problem eating a family size pizza, I need to take lactose supplement in order to digest my birth control pill every morning.
So the next time you go shopping for food, remember what your lawyer keeps telling you – always read the small print…!! You might just find a hidden source of lactose in it.
